Holladay's home for the arts!
Megan Fotheringham has been dancing since she was three years old and took summer ballet classes "for tiny little kids at the Sports Mall." She says what she loves most about dance is that "it allows me to be both physical and creative. It's hard work, but it's more than just exercising because I can express myself." Megan was scheduled to perform a solo at the Holladay Reflections in Dance Concert in April before it was cancelled due to mass gathering restrictions.
"Being a dancer requires a strong work ethic, both mentally and physically. You need a love and passion for it, especially if you're going into it professionally. It takes a lot of time and hard work, and there's no reason to do something if you don't love it."
"My advice to someone who wants to be a dancer is to just go for it! There's a certain stigma about dance, but dance is for everybody. It doesn't matter whether you're a boy or girl or don't have a certain body type. Don't think you're not worthy of dancing because you absolutely are!"
Primarily trained as a ballet dancer, Megan has been dancing with Ballet Center Utah, Inc. since 2006. She joined the performing class in 2012; she has since performed many soloist roles in Ballet Center productions and has had the opportunity to choreograph many pieces for the company. In 2014, she began assistant teaching for two years before joining the faculty.
During the summers of 2017-2019, she participated in the International Youth Ballet Festival held in St. Petersburg, Russia and Salt Lake City. She had the privilege to train under Oleg Vinogradov, Victoria Stocki-Kim, Sasha Lunev, and Oscar Hawkins, among others. In 2019, she traveled to Incheon, South Korea with the University of Utah to train under the artistic direction of Mr. Vinogradov and Jay Kim.
Megan is in her second year at Westminster College pursuing a BFA in dance. Since joining the dance department, she has danced in the fall and spring concerts and joined the inaugural Westminster Dance Company. She has performed works by Natalie Desch, Bethany Hansen, Michelle Armstrong, Allison Shir, Katelynn Killian, and Cambri Fox.
